LAWRENCE, NEW YORK (MAY 2024)— Forty budding scientists from Lawrence Middle School showcased their creativity and scientific acumen at the Egg Drop Challenge hosted at the Cradle of Aviation Museum located in Garden City. The event saw seventh and eighth-grade STEM class students immerse themselves in a hands-on exploration of gravity and Newton’s Laws of Motion.

"We are egg-stremely proud of the accomplishments of all the students who participated in this competition," remarked Willis Perry, Principal of Lawrence Middle School. "It was a memorable day filled with excitement and learning. With a remarkable success rate exceeding 98.5%, our students have truly showcased their talent and dedication. We eagerly anticipate future competitions and the opportunity for our students to continue exploring the wonders of STEM.

Under the expert guidance of their STEM instructors, Fran Ubertini and Meghan Carloni, the students embarked on a thrilling journey of research, design, and construction. Working tirelessly in teams, they crafted ingenious contraptions aimed at protecting a raw chicken egg from the perils of a 30-foot drop. The challenge didn't end there; participants also had to ensure their contraptions landed on a designated target. Using an array of materials including cotton balls, bubble wrap, straws, sponges, tape, and string, the students pushed the boundaries of innovation to create their egg-saving devices.

Among the standout achievers were seventh-grade students Marjorie Lizama and Diana Quinteros-Sigaran, whose collaborative effort resulted in a flawless victory. Their device not only achieved a perfect bulls-eye landing but also safeguarded the precious cargo inside, earning them the coveted first-place award. In addition to Marjorie and Diana's remarkable achievement, eight other teams secured second-place honors, while six teams earned well-deserved third-place recognition. Each winning team was rewarded with prizes, and all participants received souvenir pins as tokens of their participation.

The Egg Drop Challenge not only served as a platform for students to apply their scientific knowledge but also fostered teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. As these young minds continue to innovate and explore, the future of STEM looks brighter than ever.
