LAWRENCE, NEW YORK (FEBRUARY 2025)—In honor of Presidents' Day, fourth-grade students at Lawrence Elementary School spent an engaging month immersing themselves in the lives of U.S. Presidents and First Ladies. Through extensive research, the students selected a President or First Lady of their choice and read biographies and articles to learn about key events in their subjects’ lives.

The culmination of their month-long study resulted in a series of creative and insightful first-person diaries, in which students wrote from the perspective of the Presidents or First Ladies they studied. These compelling journal entries captured significant moments in history, from the challenges of leadership to personal reflections on their time in office.

The project was designed to deepen students' understanding of American history while fostering critical thinking, writing, and empathy. In the days leading up to Presidents’ Day, students shared their diaries with classmates, providing a rich and thoughtful look at the lives of Presidents and First Ladies. The project allowed students to not only learn historical facts but also to reflect on the emotions and experiences of these influential figures.

The project was a memorable and meaningful way for the students of Lawrence Elementary School to celebrate Presidents' Day and gain a deeper understanding of the history they are studying.
