Lawrence Students Kick It at Burning Bases Kickball Tournament

Last week, a group of Adapted Physical Education students from Lawrence Public Schools participated in the annual Burning Bases Kickball tournament hosted by Garden City Public Schools. Lawrence fielded two teams from Lawrence Middle School and Lawrence High School while competing against students from twenty other schools across Nassau County. Each team participated in five different games during throughout the day. The students had a great time competing against schools such as Herricks, Clarke, Oyster Bay, Manhasset and South Side. The Lawrence athletes showed off their athletic skills of kicking, throwing, running, catching and defense throughout the day. In addition to the athletic skills our students demonstrated other skills including communication, cooperation, leadership and sportsmanship. At the conclusion of each game the athletes would automatically lineup and shake hands with their opponents.

The Lawrence HS team was led by Patrick Leary, the district Health and Physical Education coordinator and classroom teachers Izzy Mayo and Jamie Miller. The Lawrence MS team was led by classroom teachers Kelly Berry and Keri Johnson, school psychologist Dr. Karen Mackler and adapted physical education teacher Pat McQuillan. The day would not have been a success without the support of all of our teacher aides, classroom teacher Stephanie Rubenfeld and school nurse Susan Brooks.

At the end of the day all of students had a great time and left with a sense of accomplishment. Many of the students consider this their favorite day of the year.
